![]() Supplying Graphics |
---
General All files submitted must be accompanied by hardcopy which is of a reasonable standard that is able to be scanned. Files should be labelled in order to easily distinguish figures. A text file listing the applications used to generate the files should be saved with the files if possible. Figures should be saved/scanned at the size they are to be printed. If the final size is unknown, please enlarge rather than reduce images, enabling reduction at a later stage if necessary.
File Formats Preferable - TIFF, JPEG, GIF, EPS, EPSF
Alternatives - PDF, PS, PRN
Image Types Scanned or captured, continuous tone, colour or mono images should be saved as tiff's at the correct minimum resolution (see below). If the image is colour it should be saved in CMYK format, not RGB (except for GIF where only Indexed Colour is possible).
Scanned or captured lineart should be saved as tiff's at the correct minimum resolution and should be saved as 1bit bitmap.
Vector based images such as those generated by illustration packages (eg Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia Freehand ) should be saved as EPSF or EPS (EPSF contains the original document within the EPS). Where 'fills' are used to add texture to elements within an illustration, avoid using postscript patterns or custom screen fills. Avoid using any 'raster' export facilities that an illustration package might offer, as resolution tends to be low. An example of a raster export would be 'Export to JPEG' or 'Export to Tiff'.
Resolutions Continuous tone images, both colour and mono, should be saved at no less than 300dpi. Lineart bitmap images should be no less than 1000dpi. Vector EPS's (see above) are resolution independent and so do not apply.
Note: There is no significant increase in quality when saving images with resolution set higher than those specified. This will just increase the size of the file.
Media If possible always supply files on a recordable CD as this removes the likelihood of any magnetic interference during transportation. If you are unable to supply a CD then any of the following are compatible;
3.5" Floppy Diskette - 44/88mb Syquest Cartridge - 100mb Iomega Zip Disk - 1gb Iomega Jazz Disk
